Seed phrases and private keys: why are they more than a password?

What a seed phrase does, how it differs from a login password, and why you should not translate it or submit it through a support form.

A seed phrase is not a password reminder. In wallets that use this mechanism, it forms part of the process of restoring access, so it should not be treated as ordinary information you can send to support or paste into a chat. Understand which mechanism your particular wallet uses.

What the standard describes

BIP 39 describes a way to represent random information as a sequence of words and derive a seed used to create deterministic wallets. The specification is not an instruction to choose a memorable sentence. Not every wallet uses the same standard or recovery process.

An additional passphrase, where supported and used, is not simply another name for the word list. Its role needs to be understood from the wallet's documentation. This guide does not ask you to change existing settings or attempt recovery without preparation.

Do not translate or invent the words

The words are technical data, not text to edit. Translating them into Hebrew, changing their order or making your own corrections can alter the information. BIP 39 makes clear that switching between word lists in different languages does not necessarily preserve the same seed.

The practical rule follows: use the official instructions for the exact product. Do not use a random generator found in an advert, and do not ask a writing tool to produce a real seed phrase.

Distinguish support from handing over access

You can ask for help and describe a problem without revealing the list. Before entering any sensitive information, check who is requesting it, on which screen and for what purpose. A familiar logo alone does not answer those questions.

ביטקוין.com does not offer a recovery service and does not need this information. If you contact us about an error in a guide, send only the page address and a description of the problem. Securing access also begins with deciding what information to leave out of an enquiry.
