The Lightning Network: what changes when bitcoin moves through a payment channel

An introduction to the Lightning payment layer and the questions to ask about wallets, custody and receiving payments.

Lightning is a payment network built on top of Bitcoin that uses payment channels. It is not a new coin with a similar name. However, paying through a Lightning wallet does not necessarily work in the same way as sending a normal transaction on the base network.

What the payment layer offers

The Lightning Network website describes payments made through channels, using the base network to open and close those channels. The aim is to allow payments without recording every intermediate change as a separate on-chain transaction.

That general description does not mean every wallet hides or reveals the same details, or that every payment will succeed in the same way in every situation. Using a particular product requires understanding its interface and model.

Check exactly what the recipient is requesting

Before paying, check whether the request is for the base network or Lightning, and how your wallet supports it. Do not assume that two fields labelled Bitcoin necessarily accept the same type of request.

You can ask the recipient which payment route they expect and what should appear on the confirmation screen. Distinguish a general technical explanation from instructions written for a specific wallet version.

Custody matters here too

Ask who manages the funds, who handles the channels and how recovery works when replacing a device. Convenience does not answer those questions. Also establish which fees are displayed and at what stage they are set.

This guide does not promise instant or free payments and does not recommend a wallet. It aims to prevent a basic mistake: recognising the word Lightning without checking the route and conditions under which your app operates. Before acting, the product's current documentation and the recipient's details are part of the checks.
